External work on Carnegie Building nears completion

Media Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

External work on the Carnegie building is nearing completion and preparation for the next stage is underway.

“I am pleased to see the improvements that have been made to the Carnegie Building. The building has been strengthened to 100% NBS and additional work has been undertaken to address health and safety issues and aesthetics to the exterior. It’s a proud moment for the community,” says Scott Baxendale, Group Manager District Assets. “Refurbishing heritage buildings is always an interesting experience and you can find additional things that require addressing as the project unfolds.”

The final works undertaken by contractors Trademark Construction were to complete and install the parapet poly detailing, plaster and paint the parapet area, and build a new accessible entrance.

“Seeing the scaffolding come down and the building emerge is very exciting,” comments Westland District Mayor Helen Lash. “Council is looking forward to working with the new Museum Director and beginning preparations to start Stage 2 of the three-stage project. This will involve determining the requirements to complete Stage 2 and engaging contractors to undertake the fit-out of the galleries. The fit-out includes plastering and painting of walls, installation of lighting, flooring, and other internal requirements.”

Funding of $1,485,000 is included in the Annual Plan 2023/2024 for the fit-out. This includes funding of $709,390 brought forward from the 2022/2023 year.
