Fox Glacier water treatment plant

Key Projects

Due to the age and condition of the existing water treatment plant and periodic e-coli transgressions, Council engaged Marshall Projects Ltd to construct a new membrane filtration water treatment plant.

The current plant fails to comply with mandatory bacterial and protozoal measures outlined in the Council’s Long Term Plan 2021-2031. The new plant will have an increased water take limit and continuous monitoring installed. There is a potential for growth and expansion as required.

Due to ongoing manufacturing and supply chain issues caused by Covid-19 the timeframe for completion has been extended to October 2023. There are still manufacturing delays and parts unavailable for the contractors to install. As a precaution the boil water notice remains in place until the water treatment plant is operational.

Four boil water notices issued during the 2019/2020 financial year.

April Fox Glacier placed on a precautionary permanent boil water notice.
December Marshall Projects Ltd, the contractors appointed to construct the new water treatment plant advise Council that there will be a significant delay in completing the project due to equipment availability.

January Community meeting held with Fox Glacier residents.
February Project timeline confirmed with a completion date of October 2023.
March Community advised that the main skid is ready for shipping and other major components have been ordered.
April Construction of the plant begun.

Next Steps

Council staff are conducting a site visit with contractors in late June to confirm the site layout and temporary equipment.

In July 2023 the existing treatment plant building will be removed and  the treatment process equipment relocated. Once this has been completed, the new building will be erected and equipment can be installed. This includes the main process skid and the standby generator. This is expected to be during August/September.
