Wildfoods Festival Future Secured as Council Confirms 2027 Delivery

Westland District Council has confirmed the future of one of the Coast’s most iconic events, agreeing that the Wildfoods Festival will return to Council delivery for the 2027 festival year.

The decision follows advice from Destination Westland that it does not wish to continue delivering the event. Council’s resolution ensures continuity while allowing time to determine the most sustainable long-term model for governance and delivery.

Mayor Helen Lash said the Wildfoods Festival remains an important part of Westland’s identity and visitor economy.

“The Wildfoods Festival is more than an event, it is part of our story and a celebration of the character and creativity of the West Coast. This decision ensures the festival continues while we take the time to plan carefully for its future.”

Council has established a one-year transition period. During this time, Council will lead delivery of the 2027 festival while undertaking further work to evaluate long-term options, including governance arrangements, delivery partnerships and financial sustainability.

The transition period will also allow Council to prepare a supporting business case to guide future decision-making and ensure the festival remains viable, well-managed and aligned with community and economic development outcomes.

Barbara Phillips, CEO said the transition approach balances certainty with responsible planning.

“We are providing certainty to the community and businesses who rely on the festival, while ensuring we take a considered, financially responsible approach to its future.”

Council’s intention is that it will work closely with event partners, local businesses, iwi, community organisations and volunteers during the transition period to strengthen the festival’s unique character and strong community involvement.
