West Coast councils move to lead local government reform response

West Coast councils have welcomed the Government announcement confirming a three-month window for regions to put forward proposals to reshape local government arrangements.

Local leaders say the announcement provides important clarity on both the direction of reform and the timeframe for action, enabling the region to move into the next phase of work.

Councils and iwi have already been working together to build a shared understanding of the current system, including the challenges and opportunities ahead. The next phase will focus on engaging with communities before any decisions are made.

“The direction from Government is clear- change is coming. Our focus is on ensuring the Coast leads how we respond to that change,” Local leaders said.

This work will focus on developing practical, evidence-based options that reflect the West Coast’s unique geography, dispersed communities, and the realities of delivering infrastructure and services across the region.

Community engagement will be central to the process, with councils confirming that engagement will come before decisions.

“We are committed to ensuring our communities are fully informed and involved. People need to understand what is being considered, why it matters, and how they can help shape the outcome,” Local leaders said.

Protecting local identity and ensuring fair representation across all communities will be key considerations.

Local leaders say the reform process represents a defining moment for the region.

“The decisions we make now will shape how the Coast is governed, how services are delivered, and how future investment is planned. It is critical we take a considered, evidence-based approach.”

The West Coast is well positioned to respond, with a strong track record of collaboration across councils and with iwi providing a solid foundation for the work ahead.

Work will now progress across the region, with a focus on deepening collaboration, engaging with communities, and developing a credible, locally led proposal within the Government’s timeframe.
