The Hokitika Airport upgrade is set to reach its next major milestone, with physical works scheduled to commence on 6 October 2026.
The move into construction follows the planning, design and procurement phases of the project and marks an important step towards delivering the major infrastructure improvements announced earlier this year.
Fulton Hogan has been awarded the main civil works contract, with Hamish Hamilton Electrical undertaking the electrical works and Beca providing project design and management.
The upgrade will deliver improvements to the runway and surrounding airfield infrastructure, new airfield lighting and electrical systems, and improved resilience to support the airport’s long-term operation.
Westland District Council General Manager District Assets Erle Bencich said reaching the construction phase was a significant milestone following months of detailed planning and preparation.
“It’s exciting to see the project moving into physical works. A considerable amount of work has taken place behind the scenes to get us to this point, and we are now at the stage where people will start to see the upgrade taking shape,” said Erle.
“This is about ensuring Hokitika Airport remains safe, reliable and resilient for the future. The airport is an important connection for the West Coast, not only for passengers and businesses, but also for emergency and essential services when our road connections may be disrupted.”
Preparatory activity is already underway, including surveying, contractor coordination and establishment of work areas ahead of the main construction programme.
Required lizard management work will also be undertaken before construction begins in affected areas. Threatened lizard species identified on the airfield will be safely relocated to a new habitat as part of this work.
Construction will be carefully managed around airport operations, with safety and minimising disruption to passengers, airlines and other airport users a key focus throughout the project.
The Hokitika Airport upgrade is jointly funded by Development West Coast and the Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund, which is administered by Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit.
Physical works are expected to continue through to the end of April 2027.
