Westland District Council has temporarily adjusted its Dog Control on-call service hours following a social media post that encouraged prank calls to Dog Control late at night and promoted online abuse of council staff.
The post, which incited harassment of a council employee, represents unacceptable behaviour. Encouraging harassment or abuse of staff, including through social media, is not tolerated and the matter has been reported to Police.
While the post was removed by the site administrator once they became aware of the situation, a further late-night prank call which became threatening was received by the on-call Dog Control staff member. This behaviour is unacceptable and has regrettably directly impacted Council’s ability to safely provide an on-call service.
As a result, Dog Control on-call services will not operate between 5.00pm and 6.00am until this matter is resolved by Police.
If members of the public have concerns about roaming or dangerous dogs during this period, they are advised to contact Police in the first instance.
Westland District Council is deeply disappointed that the actions of some individuals have resulted in a reduction of service for the wider community. Council has a duty to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its staff, and abusive and threatening behaviour toward employees, whether online or in person, will not be tolerated.
Council thanks the community for its understanding and reminds residents that respectful engagement is essential to maintaining essential services for everyone.
