A Potentially Significant Weather Event coming through on Sunday 21 September

With a potentially significant weather event coming through on Sunday 21 September, Council are issuing advance warnings for a number of roads in the Westland District managed network.

These are roads where we have recently and regularly experienced surface flooding and other issues on so there is a strong possibility these roads could be closed at short notice this weekend.

 1. Kaniere-Kowhitirangi Road – There are new gates at the Kaniere and Kokatahi Ends of this road. If they are closed they will not be locked but please refrain from using this road when it is flooded.

2. Robertson Road, Harihari. – St Georges Creek Regularly overflows in high rainfall.

3. Peterson Road, Harihari. – Regularly floods in high rainfall.

4. Oneone Road, Harihari. – Poerua River regularly goes over this road in high rainfall.

5. Waitangitaona Road, Whataroa. – Waitangitahuna River regularly goes over this road in high rainfall.

6. Haast-Jackson Bay Road, Haast. Various locations along this road are subject to surface flooding during high rainfall, the Slips between Neils Beach and Jackson Bay are active and may come over the protective bunds.

7. Nolan Road, Haast. – Okuru River may go over this road.

8. North & South Turnbull Roads, Haast. – Turnbull River may go over these roads.

9. Jackson River Road, Haast. – The gate at Lake Ellery Bridge may be closed if the river overtops the road.

This list is not exhaustive; these are just our "known hot spots" so any road could potentially be closed at very short notice.

As with any storm event we cannot predict where the worst hit areas will be so we urge caution for everybody who needs to travel during this storm. If you can delay your travel please consider doing so. Sending out rescue teams places others at risk.
