From Metservice – Strong winds and heavy rain forecast today

Periods of heavy rain and strong northwest winds for parts of central and southern New Zealand

An active cold front is forecast to move northeast over the South Island and the lower North Island today. Periods of heavy rain and strong northwesterly winds precede the front, followed by cold southwesterlies. The heaviest rain is expected in Fiordland, Westland south of Otira, and the headwaters of Otago and Canterbury Lakes and Rivers, and a heavy rain Warning is in force for these areas. Northwesterly winds are expected to reach severe gale strength in exposed parts of the Canterbury High Country, Marlborough, Wellington, and southern Wairarapa, where a strong wind Warning is in force.

Also a Watch for the possibility of rainfall amounts reaching warning criteria in Westland from Otira northwards, Buller, the ranges of northwest Nelson, the Tararua Range, Mt Taranaki, and the ranges of Bay of Plenty east of Opotiki remains in place. This Watch is also for the possibility of northwest winds reaching severe gale in exposed parts of Southland, Otago, the remainder of Canterbury and Wairarapa not in Warning, and Hawkes Bay south of Napier.
