Sport New Zealand Rural Travel Fund Grant Allocations for 2017 Announced
The Local Allocations Committee for Sport New Zealand is pleased to announce the 2017 Rural Travel Fund grant allocations as follows:
South Westland Rugby Football Club have been allocated $1,950, Wests Rugby Football Club $700, West Coast Special Olympics $1,000, South Westland Netball $1,800, Hokitika Rugby League $550, Hokitika Hockey Club $1,350 and Kokatahi-Kowhitirangi Pony Club $1,150.
Grants are awarded to subsidise travel for junior teams participating in local sports competitions outside of school time. Applications for funding each year are open to rural sports clubs and rural school sports teams with members between the ages of 5 and 19 years old.
Geographical isolation, urban drift and lack of employment opportunities and lack of access to other funding sources have been identified as barriers to young people from rural areas participating in sports. The Rural Travel Fund was launched by Sport New Zealand in response to concerns from rural Territorial Authorities about the lack of participation in sports from young people living within their boundaries.
