Hokitika Swimming Pool reopening

Media Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Westland District Council and Destination Westland are looking forward to welcoming customers back to the refurbished Hokitika Swimming Pool next week.

“We appreciate the patience of the community while the structural and systems upgrade work has been undertaken,” says Westland District Council Chief Executive, Simon Bastion. “The refurbished facility is excellent, and the upgrades ensure modern systems with improved functionality.”

Entry to the Swimming Pool will be from the rear of the building on Sewell Street while contractors finish the new reception and changing facilities.

“The Mayor and Elected Members got a sneak peek at the work last Thursday. They are very impressed with the improvements. Once the remaining new parts of the facility are completed the Swimming Pool will have a very modern look and feel. We think that people will be very happy with the facility. It is an important community asset for community wellbeing.”

Swimming pool staff have been busy training on the new equipment systems and preparing the building for users. “We want everyone to have a great experience and enjoy the upgraded facility,” says Destination Westland Chief Executive, Melanie Anderson. “It is a great team of people, and they are excited to see our customers again. We’re also looking forward welcoming back a familiar face with the return of Angie Paul as our pool supervisor. I’m thrilled that the pool can reopen while the remaining work is completed.”

Contractors will continue to work on the new reception and changing areas over the next few months. All of the work is expected to be completed by April 2024. This stage of the redevelopment has seen the installation of a new pool water treatment plant in a new external plant room, installation of new circulation pipework and pool liner, and additional seismic strengthening works to the main concourse.
