Council awarded $3.25 million funding towards tourism infrastructure projects
Westland District Council is delighted to announce that it has been successful in obtaining over $3.25 million of central government funding for four high priority infrastructure projects across the district. Out of a pool of just under $15 million, Westland as a region gained 23% of the total. This financial support enables Council to upgrade existing infrastructure (or provide new infrastructure) to alleviate the pressure created by increased tourism growth.
Outcome of District Court hearing regarding dogs
Two dogs believed to be involved in the death of a cat in Hokitika in August this year have been returned to their owner following a District Court hearing in Greymouth on Monday 11 December 2017.
Westlander of the Year winners announced
After a flurry of nominations in the last two weeks, Westland District Council is pleased to announce the winners of the Westlander of the Year Awards for significant and meritorious service to the benefit of Westland during 2017.
New Council Dog Control Contract in Place
Westland Dog Services were recently appointed as the Westland District Council’s new dog control contractors with their contract taking effect from 1 November 2017.
Westland Dog Services has significant animal control experience. The two-person team is based in Hokitika and has been charged with responding to all dog control incidents in Westland.
New Road Safety Measure on Stafford Street by Westland Milk Products Factory
There is now a working pedestrian crossing on Stafford Street between the Westland Milk Products staff car park and the factory. This area is now marked and signs are up. On Friday 29/09 contractors from Westroads and Electronet will be doing works to set up floodlights over the pedestrian crossing for night-time visibility. We expect this work will be completed by the middle of next week. The works should not impact on traffic, but please do be mindful of your speed in this area.
Hokitika Waterfront Development Plan
The Westland District Council adopted the developed design of the Waterfront Development at its August meeting.
Tourism Infrastructure Fund
The Government has just announced that $5.2m has been made available from the Tourism Facilities Grant Fund to 16 Councils around New Zealand.
Westland is a major winner, with a total of $1.02m for 5 different projects in our District. The Tourism Facilities Grant Fund was created to provide support for councils with high visitor numbers and small ratepayer bases.
