Update 3 – 4 April 2019: Flow of rubbish into river stopped
Rubbish is no longer flowing into the Fox River from the closed Fox Glacier Township Landfill after contractors working there successfully diverted the river today. This has stopped the flow of rubbish into the river. The next step is to install rock protection to the area. This work provides a short term solution while a longer term plan to secure the site is put in place.
This is the latest information about the regions roads as of 12.00pm, Wednesday 3 April:
Dorothy Falls Road is still closed Between the Farm and Hans Bay. The Styx River end is open. It is currently accessible but a little rough in places so best suited to 4x4 vehicles until later in the week. Works are being done from today and it should be accessible for normal vehicles by the end of the week.
Milltown Road open only to residents presently but good progress is being made by repair crews.
Update on the South Westland clean-up
Following last week’s significant rainfall event, Westland District Council has been undertaking assessments to assets throughout the district. The Council has found significant damage to roads and other assets. One of these being a closed landfill alongside the Fox River. The closed landfill was established in the 1960’s and closed in the early 2000’s.
