Description of Proposal – Council received a proposal from the Hokitika Lions Club regarding the redevelopment of Lazar Park. This matter was considered by Council at the 27 June 2019 meeting and a resolution was passed to support the proposal proceeding to a special consultative process.
Westland District Council wishes to advise Fox Glacier residents connected to the Fox Glacier township water supply that there will be a water shut down for an estimated 3 hours on Thursday 18 July 2019.
The shut down will take place in the afternoon from 1pm to 4pm.
This is to allow for a section of water pipeline to be replaced which currently feeds water from the water treatment plant to consumers. The new pipeline offers greater resilience for the community supply and is Stage one of the new water treatment plant upgrade.
PROPOSAL TO CLOSE STREET TO VEHICULAR AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC
Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, notice is hereby given that for the purpose of the installation of underground services; the Westland District Council proposes to close the following road to ordinary vehicular traffic indicated hereunder.

Update 3 – 4 April 2019: Flow of rubbish into river stopped
Rubbish is no longer flowing into the Fox River from the closed Fox Glacier Township Landfill after contractors working there successfully diverted the river today. This has stopped the flow of rubbish into the river. The next step is to install rock protection to the area. This work provides a short term solution while a longer term plan to secure the site is put in place.
This is the latest information about the regions roads as of 12.00pm, Wednesday 3 April:
Dorothy Falls Road is still closed Between the Farm and Hans Bay. The Styx River end is open. It is currently accessible but a little rough in places so best suited to 4x4 vehicles until later in the week. Works are being done from today and it should be accessible for normal vehicles by the end of the week.
Milltown Road open only to residents presently but good progress is being made by repair crews.
Update on the South Westland clean-up
Following last week’s significant rainfall event, Westland District Council has been undertaking assessments to assets throughout the district. The Council has found significant damage to roads and other assets. One of these being a closed landfill alongside the Fox River. The closed landfill was established in the 1960’s and closed in the early 2000’s.

This is the current status of the local roads and bridges in Westland following the storm event of last week.
Clean up effort in coastal Westland
Following last week’s significant rainfall event, the legacy landfill site at Fox River has been severely eroded by the river, with the river cutting through approximately 40m of bush, causing rubbish to be taken downstream and north through the northern drift at sea. Litter has been observed along approximately 20km of riverbed and from the Fox River mouth as far north as Okarito as of Saturday.

Following this week’s significant rainfall event Westland District Council has been undertaking assessments to assets throughout the district. The Council has found significant damage to roads and other assets.
From these assessments Council has located a historic rubbish dump site beside the Fox River. This site has been severely eroded by the river causing rubbish to be taken downstream and north through the northern drift at sea.

Milltown Road (Lansburgh Bridge) –abutments washed out – Est. 2 weeks
Detour on Arahura Road – Repairs in progress. – expect to be reopened tomorrow.
