Road closure - South from Harihari

Whataroa half kilometre long slip closes State Highway 6

Daylight has revealed a lengthy, active slip between Whataroa and Harihari on the West Coast.

State Highway 6 north of Franz Josef Glacier was closed in the early hours of this morning as a result.

Haast emergency water shutdown

A water shutdown is required for emergency repairs affecting Haast Village. Repairs will be carried out between 11.00am and 12.00pm today.

Water notice - Arahura

The Level 1 Water alert has been lifted. Residents and users are reminded to continue boiling water.

Speed Limit Trial

In November 2018 Council resolved to trial lower speed limits on a number of high profile roads in the district. Signposts with new speed limits are now being erected. The temporary speed limits will remain in place until 31 May 2019, unless formally adopted by Council at an earlier time. A wider speed limit review is planned towards the end of May and will involve public consultation with the public invited to submit their thoughts on the new speed limits.

Broken Water Main - Fixed

A water main has been broken by contractors. The following areas may be affected:

Revell Street between Park and Spencer Streets

Sewell Street between Park and Spencer Streets

Tudor Street between Revell and Sewell Streets

Repairs are expected to take between 2 to 4 hours.

Restricted Fire Season

Fire and Emergency NZ have declared a Restricted Fire Season in the Westland District in all rural and urban districts from 8am, 22 January 2019. 

During a Restricted Fire Season you will require a permit if you wish to light an open air fire. See here to check the fire season status and apply for a permit.

Proposed Road Closure

Proposal to close streets to vehicular traffic: Westland Car Rally

As advertised in the Hokitika Guardian, Monday 7 January 2019, the Westland Car Rally has requested to close roads on Saturday 23 March 2019 from 10.30am to 3.30pm. The road for closure was not noted.

The road proposed for closure is: Old Christchurch Road, from Duffers Creek Road to SH73.

Water Conservation - Kumara

Water Conservation alert – Kumara Level 1

Kumara reservoir water levels have improved significantly over night. WDC wish to thank the Kumara community for their continued support.

The alert has now been downgraded to level 1.
