Wanted – Community Feedback on the Draft Annual Plan

Community engagement on the Draft Annual Plan for 2022/2023 begins on Friday 6 May and Council is looking forward to hearing what Westland District Residents have to say.

“Reviewing the Draft Annual Plan for this year has been exceptionally tough for staff. They are well aware that the cost of living is increasing for everyone. I know that they have done their best to ensure that the proposed rates increase is no higher than 12.5% that we adopted in the Long Term Plan,” says Deputy Mayor David Carruthers.

“It is a difficult situation; there are some things that the Council must do, such as plan for Chlorination of the water supply and the associated costs, but we did not want to make any unnecessary changes. We heard clearly from the community their desire to see improvements to the parks, reserves and general township maintenance across the district during the long term plan process. This is the one area where we actively sought to increase the budget. To balance these changes we propose increasing our fees and charges. Council’s philosophy is that the user pays for services that are most beneficial to an individual or a particular group, so we feel that it is fair to put our fees and charges up by 5.9%."

“Councillors feel very strongly that we can only do our job if we hear from as many community members as possible. As elected members, it is our job to listen to and consider community feedback during this process. This plan impacts everyone in the district, whether or not they own a property. We encourage people to share their feedback. While we believe that we have done our best to get the plan right, the community might have other ideas and suggestions that we will need to consider.”
