Success for Council in Kāinga Ora funding bid

Media Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Work to develop part of the land at Hokitika Racecourse for housing and facilities could be underway sooner rather than later and at a reduced cost to Westland ratepayers.

“Council has been informed that we have been successful in our submission to the Kāinga Ora Infrastructure Acceleration Fund RFP to advance our plan for developing part of the Hokitika racecourse land,” announced Chief Executive Simon Bastion at today’s Council meeting. “We are extremely pleased to be invited to the negotiation stage of the process and are hopeful of a positive outcome. It is very important to Council that we apply for opportunities to receive external funding when they arise and make the most of them with successful applications. Staff members will have an opportunity to meet with Kāinga Ora advisors to complete this stage of the process."

"The Racecourse Development budget was approved by Council during the Long Term Plan with the area zoned residential to be developed for housing and the remainder allocated for recreational purposes. With the shortage of accommodation in Hokitika increased housing is required sooner rather than later. This section of the racecourse land is a prime location for future housing development as it is central to services. At the same time we are working on the recreation area with support from Sport Canterbury ”
