Media Release: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Council engaging on Community Outcomes

Staff and Councillors from Westland District Council will soon be out and about speaking to the community up and down the district about the community’s aspirations for the 2021 – 31 Long Term Plan. With the reintroduction of community well-beings into the Local Government Act, Council decided it was time to ensure that Westland’s Community Outcomes reflect the goals of the community under the framework.

“Council has come up with some suggestions for the community to consider, but we also want to hear ideas from our residents”, says’ Mayor Bruce Smith. “With direction from the community about their aspirations for the future we will be able to build long-term strategies that will benefit everyone.”

The well-beings structure is: Cultural / Social, Economic and Environmental, which support Council’s vision of “working with the people of Westland to grow and protect our communities, our economy and our unique natural environment”. Mayor Smith says, “It is important for us engage with the community’s values to the best possible standard so that Council have clear guidance and can stay on the right track.”

Members of the public will be able to talk to staff and councillors at various community events and community meetings throughout February. Times and dates will be advertised on the Council website, Facebook page, and through the Westland Matters newsletter. For anyone who misses out on face-to-face events, there will be opportunities to participate in online engagement.

Mayor Smith adds, “We would like to hear as many views as possible, and not just from adults. I’d like to encourage young people to come and talk to us and let us know what you think or join in with the polls when they are available. Everyone’s voice is important here.”

The Draft Long Term Plan will be open for consultation in early 2021. This engagement will be a contributing factor in developing the plan.
