Cass Square playground tender awarded

Media Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Westland District Council is pleased to announce that Creospace Limited has been awarded the tender to build the new playground in Hokitika’s Cass Square. Council will receive $510,000 funding from the Lottery Grants Board to match the $510,000 budgeted towards the playground upgrade. Let’s Play Hokitika fundraising group has received generous donations of $30,000 towards their goal of $75,000 to offset some of the cost to the ratepayer.

“There were four excellent proposals received for the Cass Square Playground Working Group to consider,” advises Mayor Lash. “However, the Creospace proposal resonated with us for the considered approach they had taken to develop the proposal. We consider that they had really understood the concept that we were looking for and undertook very thorough research. They looked at what was already available in the play space around Hokitika, and what points of difference could be offered at Cass Square. The concept provided us with different options, and they have thought about some of the icons of Hokitika and how to incorporate them into the design. They also included accessibility aspects, which will enable the whole family to enjoy the playground.”

“At this stage, installation of the new playground will begin in early 2024,” says Jan Visser, Facilities and Properties Manager. “This gives the contractor time to work on proposed design changes, plan the build and manufacture the equipment. Ideally, the playground will be open by next spring.”

Creospace is a New Zealand company with locations throughout the country, including a manufacturing workshop in Oamaru. They also have a focus on local, sustainable materials including shock pad made in-house out of 100% New Zealand recycled rubber.
