2010 Elections - Westland

Local Authority Elections throughout New Zealand are held by postal vote every three years and the next triennial elections will be held on Saturday 9 October 2010.

These elections will be conducted under the provisions of the Local Electoral Act 2001, the Local Electoral Regulations 2001, and the Local Government Act 2002. The elections for the Westland District will be the First Past the Post Electoral System.

Additional Information

Voting documents will be dispatched to all qualified electors by post between the 17 September 2010 and not later than the 22 September 2010.  Voting documents must be returned by post or delivered to reach the Electoral Officer, Westland District Council, 36 Weld Street, Hokitika not later than noon on Saturday 9 October 2010.  The Council office at 36 Weld Street, Hokitika will be open on Saturday 9 October 2010 from 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon for the purpose of receiving voting documents and dealing with enquiries. Voting documents will be processed during the whole voting period in accordance with a resolution passed by the Council pursuant to Section 79 of the Local Electoral Act 2001.

Special voting in accordance with the Local Electoral Regulations 2001 may be exercised at the offices of the Westland District Council at any time during ordinary office hours between 20 September 2010 and noon on 9 October 2010, both days inclusive.

Notice is also given that any person may apply to enrol as either a residential elector or a ratepayer elector not later than the day before the close of voting (8 October 2010).

Residential Electors

All parliamentary electors are automatically enrolled on local authority electoral rolls as 'Residential Electors' at the address where they live. A confirmation advice was issued to all parliamentary electors by the Electoral Enrolment Centre during July 2010. Enrollments are able to be made up to and including the day before the election.

Any alterations to the Residential Electors' Roll (e.g. change of address etc) should be made by:

  • Completing the appropriate form at any Post Shop
  • Telephoning 0800 367 656
  • Accessing the Electoral Enrolment Centre website on www.elections.org.nz

Ratepayer Electors (non-resident)

If a person is on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll in one district and pays rates on a property in another district, this person may be eligible to be enrolled as a non-resident Ratepayer Elector.

A firm, company, corporation or society paying rates on a property, may nominate one of its members or officers as a ratepayer elector (providing the nominated person resides outside of the district).

  • The Electoral Officer, Buller District Council, Brougham Street, Westport,

not later than noon on Saturday 9 October 2010.  The Council offices at Hokitika, Greymouth and Westport will be open on Saturday 9 October 2010 from 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon for the purpose of receiving voting documents and dealing with enquiries. Voting documents will be processed during the whole voting period in accordance with a resolution passed by the Board pursuant to Section 79 of the Local Electoral Act 2001.
