Consents
There are a number of ‘consents’ that are obtained from Westland District Council. For some proposals, a combination of the consents below will be required, although they may be able to be applied for at different times.
The Westland District Building Consent Authority controls Council's functions under the Building Act and relates to building work such as new structures, service connections, fireplaces, and marquees.
Westland District Council also processes resource consents under the Resource Management Act 1991. As a District Council, Westland District has functions in relation to the use, development and protection of land, the prevention and mitigation of noise effects and subdivision. The Council has prepared a District Plan to assist them in managing these functions and providing for the growth and character of the District. The Plan sets environmental standards through the use of rules and performance standards. If your proposal does not comply with the permitted standard, a resource consent will be required. This consent will assess the effects of the proposal and whether the specifics of the situation and surrounding area mean that a departure from the permitted activity standard is appropriate. This involves a consideration of who may be affected by the application.
The approval of Council is also needed to undertake works within legal road.
If you are unsure of which consents you require, please contact the Council.
