Big Brother Big Sister
There are kids in Hokitika and around the Westland District who would positively shine if they had someone to take a little bit of extra interest in them.
YOUNG PEOPLE NEED ROLE MODELS!
Big Brothers Big Sisters Westland is a mentoring programme that links children with adults (old and young) who have got a bit of time to offer shelter from the storm.
Does that sound like you?
We need your help!
- Would you consider spending time with a young person?
- Do you know someone who would be suitable?
What will it involve?
- Spending a few hours each week with the child being mentored (This is negotiable)
- A minimum commitment of one year.
- Attending a team meeting of 2-3 hours each month.
Mentors will not be left to cope on their own - training and on-going support will be provided.
Mentor's contact with the young person will include:
- INFORMAL TIME with the child, for example, going fishing together, playing a game, doing an activity or hobby, helping with homework, including the child in activities you are already doing.
- WORKING WITHIN A PLAN that has been designed to help the child and their family make some positive changes in their lives.
- LISTENING, ENCOURAGING, PROVIDING GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT as the child and mentor together work through issues the child is facing.
What's in it for me?
- The satisfaction of knowing that you are making a significant contribution to the life of a young person.
- Training and gaining new skills.
- Making new friends.
