Safer Community Council

The Role of the Safer Community Council (SCC)

The Westland District Safer Community Council seeks to have a wide cross-section of local organisations represented at its bi-monthly meetings so that it can be in a better position to identify the unique problems in Westland and determine the best solutions.

The government has identified seven crime reduction goals that provide the focus of our local strategy:

  • To reduce the incidence of family violence and child abuse. The SCC has published a local directory of support services. It has also produced a family charter for families that is available free.
  • To reduce other violence.
  • To reduce burglary. Our SCC oversights a restorative justice programme in conjunction with the Greymouth and Whataroa Courthouses.
  • To reduce theft of and from cars.
  • To reduce organised crime.
  • To reduce serious traffic offending. The SCC supports the West Coast Road Safety Association.
  • To reduce youth offending. The SCC is responsible for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Programme for at-risk youth, supports the C.A.C.T.U.S. programme for youth, supports the Youth Board, supports Hokitika YATA (Youth Access to Alcohol) and is about to commence a restorative justice programme for youth offenders in local Westland Schools.

InterventionsforSpecificGroups:

  • Victims. The SCC supports Westland Victim Support and the management of neighbourhood watch schemes in different parts of Westland.
  • At Risk families. The SCC supports the Awatuna Parenting Programmes Trust and is also involved in facilitating Strengthening Families Meetings.
