Museum

The West Coast Historical Museum is located in the Carnegie Building, on the corner of Tancred and Hamilton Streets, Hokitika.

The West Coast's illustrious past of pounamu (greenstone), gold mining and pioneer settlement are all well represented in the Museum collection. The Museum also has an excellent family and local history research centre; material includes West Coast books, a Pioneer Family Register, photographs, newspapers, biographical notes and much more. 

The Museum is open every day except Christmas day, during the following hours:

November–AprilMon-Sun9.30am-5.00pm
May-OctoberMon-Fri 9.30am-5.00pm
  Sat-Sun 10.00am-2.00pm

The Research Centre is open Monday to Friday, during the following hours:

November–April   Mon-Fri 1.00pm-4.00pm
May-October      Mon-Fri   1.00pm-4.00pm

An appointment is necessary. The Research Centre is closed on public holidays.
