FAQ

Frequently Asked QuestionsF.A.Q.’s

Top

1

How do I join the library? How much will it cost? Can anyone join?

Membership is free to all Westland residents. Therefore, if you live anywhere from Otira through Kumara to Hokitika, and down the coast to Haast, you can come on in, complete an application form and have some books issued immediately.

Yes, you will need to bring some proof of identity with you.

2

How old does my child need to be to join the library?

Children aged 0 to 14 can join the library, as long as they have their application signed by a parent or caregiver.

3

How many items can I borrow and how long can I borrow them for?

There is a flexible limit of 10 books per person, or 20 per family card.

Books are issued for three weeks, or a maximum extended period of six weeks.

4

How do I get help to use the catalogue?

You can receive help by visiting our Catalogue Help page, or contact us. We are always happy to help.

5

How do I view the items I have on issue?

Go to the Online Catalogue:

  1. Login
  2. Select ‘Borrower Information’
  3. Click ‘View issues’ (if you don’t see these words, don’t panic - you may not have any books issued on your card!).

Go to the Online Catalogue now.

6

I’m trying to renew my books, how do I do this?

The Catalogue Help page explains how. If a book has been reserved by another borrower, you will not be able to renew it.

7

Can I reserve an item online?

Yes. View the Catalogue Help page here to find out how

8

What if the book I’m looking for does not appear to be on the catalogue?

We have access to other library collections all around New Zealand. Therefore, we can try placing an Interloan Request for you.

If you wish to search the National Bibliographic Database yourself, use the following sign-on information:
User id: HKP99FE9 Password: OVALEGG77

To request an Interloan it is helpful to have the following details ready:

  • Your name and borrower number.
  • The Title and preferably the Author of the book (please take the time to check the spelling of the author’s name as this could hinder accurate selection of material).
  • A brief description of the content. (The purpose for this is that some books share a common title. If we have some idea of what the book is about we’re likely to source the right copy for you.)

To proceed with your request use one of three options:

1. Email us stating the above details.
2. Phone us on 755 6208
3. Come in to the library and speak with one of our friendly staff.

Interloan requests from Public Libraries cost five dollars per item. However, items which can only be sourced from an Education Provider or Legal Institution will usually cost you considerably more. In such a case we will only proceed with the request after having received your verbal confirmation to do so.

9

I’m only going to be in the area during the school holidays. Can my family or I borrow some books from the Library during this time?

Yes, you can pay for a Visitor Membership. You will need to visit the library in person to discuss pricing options available to you. Bring at least two forms of identification with you.
