Your Council
The Westland District Council was formed in 1989 from the amalgamation of Westland County Council and Hokitika Borough Council. It is a territorial local authority governed by the Local Government Act 2002.
The Council Office is located in Hokitika at 36 Weld Street and is open Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm. The Westland District Library is located in Hokitika at 20 Sewell Street and is open 6 days a week including Saturday.
The Council services a large land area with a resident population of 8403 (2006 census). Visitors to the District number between 2-6000 per day depending on the time of year.
Code of Conduct
Schedule 7 of the Local Government Act 2002 (the Act) requires each local authority to adopt a Code of Conduct.
The Code of Conduct provides guidance on the standards of behaviour that are expected from the Mayor and Elected Members of the Westland District Council.
